GPT-4.1 is an advanced AI model suited for demanding production workloads, developed by OpenAI and released in April 2025. It is a proprietary closed-weight model, available through the OpenAI API. The 1M-token context window is large enough to hold entire codebases, lengthy technical documents, or extended agentic sessions without truncation.

GPT-4.1 was released on April 14, 2025 as OpenAI’s API-optimised model bridging the GPT-4o generation and GPT-5. Rather than maximising benchmark scores, it was tuned for production reliability: more consistent tool-calling, better instruction adherence across long conversations, and a 1M-token context window that made it the first OpenAI model suitable for ingesting entire software repositories in a single prompt. Many long-document and RAG-based applications were built around GPT-4.1’s stable API surface before GPT-5 arrived, and it remains in production use for workloads that prioritise the 1M-context capability at a lower price point than the GPT-5 series.
