MiniMax M3

FrontierOpen-weightAvailable in FlowHunt

MiniMax M3 is a top-tier frontier AI model, developed by MiniMax and released in June 2026. As an open-weight model, its trained weights are publicly available — you can self-host it, fine-tune it on proprietary data, or run it on-premise without API dependencies. The 1M-token context window is large enough to hold entire codebases, lengthy technical documents, or extended agentic sessions without truncation.

On the FlowHunt AI Leaderboard it is one of 24 tracked models, evaluated across 2 benchmarks. Standout scores: 59.0% on SWE-bench Pro (#6 of 9); 66.0% on Terminal-Bench (#6 of 8).

MiniMax M3 was released on June 1, 2026 as a deliberate statement: the first open-weight frontier model to match closed API providers on context length (1M tokens) and include native multimodal understanding. MiniMax had spent three years developing context extension techniques and multimodal training infrastructure to make this possible. M3’s open-weight release created a new category of model — frontier-class, multimodal, and fully self-hostable — that had previously not existed. The release was widely covered in AI research circles as the moment open-weight models closed the last major capability gap with closed API models.

Note: First open-weight: frontier coding + 1M context + native multimodal. Weights pending.

Website →

MiniMax is a Chinese AI startup founded in 2021 by Yan Junjie, who previously led computer vision research at SenseTime. The company is backed by major Chinese investors including Hillhouse Capital, Yunqi Partners, and Tencent. MiniMax initially focused on consumer-facing AI applications — including the Hailuo AI chatbot — before transitioning into foundation-model development. The M3 model release in June 2026 marked the company's entry into the frontier tier: the first open-weight model to match closed API providers on context length (1M tokens) while including native multimodal capabilities. MiniMax positions itself as the most developer-friendly Chinese AI lab, releasing model weights publicly with permissive licences.
