Categories
Group documents and Q&A entries into categories and limit a retriever to the categories you choose.
A category is a named, colored group. Every document and every Q&A entry belongs to exactly one category, and a retriever can be told to search only some of them. Open Knowledge sources → Categories.
Create a category#
Click Add Category. In the dialog, enter a name and pick a color, then save. A color is chosen at random for you. You can also create a category on the spot from the document upload dialog with Create new Category, and a Q&A CSV import creates the categories it names.
Use Search by category name… to find one. The edit button on a row lets you rename it or change its color.
Use categories to organise content#
- Documents: choose the category when you add a document, change it later in the document’s edit dialog, or select several rows on the Documents page and use Assign Category.
- Q&A: choose the category in the entry’s form. If you change the category of a primary question, its alternative questions move with it.
- Filters: both the Documents and the Q&A pages have a category filter.
Crawled pages are not in categories. They are grouped by schedule instead.
Filter a retriever by category#
In the Document Retriever step, the Document Categories field lists your categories. Select one or more, and the step searches only documents and Q&A entries in them. The step also has a Category IDs option, which takes IDs as a comma-separated list from an earlier step in the flow. You pick one of the two ways to give the categories.
To find a category ID inside a flow, add a Category Search step. It searches your categories by name and returns their IDs.
Remove a category#
Click Remove Category and confirm. The dialog warns that all documents in the category are permanently deleted. Q&A entries in the category are deleted with it, even though the dialog does not say so.
This cannot be undone
Move anything you want to keep to another category first. Select the rows on the Documents page and use Assign Category.
Memory categories are separate#
Memory has its own categories, managed on the Memory page. They do not appear on this page and a retriever does not use them.
Next steps#
Go to Documents to upload files into a category, or to Questions and answers to add entries to one.
